Rootsix: Dragondrop EP
Concrete Plastic

Brighton-based Si Mills makes his solo debut under the Rootsix guise with the wide-ranging 12-inch Dragondrop. The opening title track imaginatively puts a futuristic spin on electronic dance music by littering its mid-tempo swing with tumbling drum patterns, disco bass spatter, and radiant synth washes. The more aggressive “Untittaled” gets busy with an equally tight and slinky electro-funk groove peppered with iridescent synth flares and slamming bass stabs. The B side brings the high-velocity charge of “The Next Nosebleed,” an acid-techno throwdown Mills digs into with serious purpose, to the fore while “Trigger Bang Float” cools the EP's heels with a slightly mellower, Detroit-inflected outro packed with synth showers and shuffling rhythm touches. Getting straight to the point, Rootsix's stylistically varying material makes for a solid appetizer.
